Viking settlement of Hedeby (Haithabu) (Schleswig-Holstein)
Between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea on the historical "Ochsenweg" (ox road), then the most important north-south transport link in northern Germany, the medieval city and viking settlement of Hedeby was situated. Hedeby was a major transshipment point for goods from all parts of the then known world. Apart from goods slaves were traded there as well. From the historical Hedeby today's Haddeby has arisen, which is today part of
Busdorf.
After a battle in 1066 Hedeby was completely destroyed and not rebuilt. The place was abandoned and fell into oblivion and since then sank slowly in the Haddebyer Noor. At the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th Century were the first excavations. Today there is the Viking Museum Hedeby.
